Professionalism might be understood as dressing professionally at work, performing well in your job, while others may think that having a good degree is what makes you professional. While professionalism encompasses these definitions, it goes beyond them. It is easier to discern professionalism after delineating the profession.
Behrend et. al. (2006) explain that occupation is a specific, paid job that requires a formal education. Professions refer to individuals who must demonstrate professional performance and skills in order to be successful in their chosen profession. The profession of professionalism refers to the ability of being able to predict the occupational potential. DiscussionI believe that nursing requires nurses to be professional. Normal improvement of self. accountability and duty for thoughtful practice. It also demonstrates a spirit of cooperation and flexibility. Trustworthiness, specialized know-how, accountability, and other important traits are all essential. These are the characteristics that define a nurse or individual as a professional. Here are three main traits I consider professional nurses to be. Professionalism in nursing depends on teamwork. Nursing is a collaboration. We focus on providing safe outcomes for our patients and medical staff. A dysfunctional group can lead to a decrease in productivity, increased conflicts, job satisfaction, and exaggerated worker turnover. It can hinder the effectiveness of your team by causing differences in experience, training, and skill sets. Communication is essential for team cooperation and the improvement of the group. A nurse manager must set an example and communicate well. To foster trust and respect among workers, they encourage open and honest conversation. Second, appearance is an integral part of professionalism in nursing. Nursing professionals must understand that nurses’ appearances can speak volumes about their abilities. A poorly-presented nurse is no one’s friend. I believe that a nurse who presents professionally and has a professional appearance will be more comfortable in their current situation and people will feel more inclined to help them. Thomas, Ehret et.al. (2010) stated,’most patients agreed that a nurse is more competent if they are clean-shaven and dressed appropriately’. As a nurse professional, you should continue learning. A nurse’s education is not enough to make sure they continue learning. Everyday new technologies and findings are being discovered. Nurses need to keep learning so they can be more effective in their profession. Nurses must be constantly learning from diverse sources and updating their skills on a regular basis. For nurses to be professional, they must have self-awareness. Being self-aware allows us to assess ourselves regularly to ensure we are meeting the professional standards. One can assess their own performance and learn how to improve it daily. According to my view, nurses want to think about how they could improve the professionalism of their workplace. According to Staples, 2009, “There are many small steps that can made to make a significant difference. Through re-evaluating onesself on a daily basis, nurses can see what they do well and then the place improvements can be made in order to enhance professionalism.” Nursing students know that discipline is essential for professional nursing. This profession requires a high level of punctuality. A nurse must keep an eye on the patient, monitor their progress and report to duty. Nursing care will be compromised if the nurse is asleep or snores.
A nurse must also record the time they are on duty to ensure that they can be relieved by their predecessor. You can easily cause chaos at work by not reporting on time. Therefore, professionalism in the area is essential to ensure time is respected and that no one else can interfere with nursing exercises. The profession of nursing requires professionalism. The boundaries of professionalism in the nursing field are not easy to overcome. However, it is possible to work together towards a common goal. Nursing professionals must maintain a consistent belief in their work. It is essential that nurses care for patients with doubts.
